Hi, my name is Patch (they/them). I am a lifelong self-proclaimed computer enthusiast. Since I was a kid I’ve loved finding new ways to make computers do the fun things I want them to. I loved making custom wallpapers and cursors, playing Flash games (RIP), and browsing YouTube. Eventually I started clobbering together batch scripts on my home computer and doing some light programming on my TI-84 calculator. This naturally became an interest in software development as a serious hobby and career – after all, I already looked up to legendary solo game devs like ZUN, the creator of the Touhou Project video game series. They were heroes to me, and since most of them started as software programmers, I thought it made sense to do the same.

I was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1999. I grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, progressing through Riverfield Elementary School, Roger Ludlowe Middle School, and Fairfield Ludlowe High School. In my senior year, my high school was finally offering a rigorous Computer Science class, so I took it and had a blast, and ended up doing really well on the AP CS exam. After high school, I moved to Rochester, NY to attend Rochester Institute of Technology as a Computer Science major. While there, I did a co-op (internship) with Morton Salt and the school itself doing various techy work.

I also have a habit of picking up a new hobby every once in a while on a whim. The weirdest one was probably in college… I saw a hat on a video game character and wanted a real-life version, so I started going to the college fiber arts club to learn how to make it myself. I had more fun just talking with everyone there, but every once in a while I dig up the crochet hooks to refresh my memory.

I describe myself as a “computer enthusiast,” but to me, that’s just the simple idea that computers are cool. Admittedly I’m much more into software than hardware, but I just love playing around to find new things to do with them. I’m constantly finding some new program to integrate into my daily activities, including writing tons of one-off scripts to smooth things over. For example, I needed an easy way to resize images to a more appropriate size to serve as banners and icons for my notes programs, so I wrote up a few quick scripts to crop, scale, and trim them down, then used application menu entries to add them to the context menu when I right-click on images. Several months down the line, I came back to the scripts and reworked them into a single script so it was less bulky whenever I needed to fix an image. These are all of course shared across all my computers with a sync program, which also holds various other config files that I want all my computers to use, and… yeah… you get the picture.

Currently, I am trying to allow myself to destress. I have suffered from undiagnosed ASD and OCD since I was little, and hadn’t really put the pieces together until I was in my 20s (which is also coincidentally when I figured out that I am non-binary). I hadn’t really been able to figure out how to live with all the complicated emotions running wild, so part of the destressing process is undoing 20-ish years of learned behavioral patterns. It’s a little daunting, but so far it’s been highly rewarding. Starting this blog is actually a huge part of my plan. Check out my first blog post for more info on that.

Thank you for reading. I hope you have fun on my site!
